GreenPower UPS Technology: Bypass Design

GreenPower UPS™ Technology from CyberPower improves operating efficiency, reduce heat generation, and consume less power than conventional UPS models.

Our patented Bypass Design allows current to bypass the transformer and automatic voltage regulation (AVR) when utility power is normal, thus reducing energy consumption and associated costs. Because utility power functions normally most of the time, the bypass design allows for substantial energy savings. This technology also reduces heat generation, an important factor in decreasing operating costs.

Transformers and Transformer Outlets

A transformer converts alternating current line voltage to a higher value or a lower value. Transformers rely upon electromagnetic induction, the process which occurs when the alternating current within a circuit generates current in a nearby circuit.

Transformers vary in design and size, as well as using different amounts of current. Small transformers plug into a wall outlet and create low direct current voltages which are used by common electronic devices. Transformer outlets are more widely spaced than other outlets to accommodate transformer block adapters or other adapters that are large in size. Transformer outlets can be used to connect any appropriate device to a surge protector.

Automatic Voltage Regulation

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) in line interactive UPS systems stabilizes the incoming AC signal to maintain output power at a nominal 120 volts by controlling high and low voltages without resorting to battery power. This significantly increases battery life and lessens the likelihood of data loss, memory freezes, and system crashes.

How AVR Works in a Line Interactive UPS

A line interactive UPS includes an AVR autotransformer a special type of transformer designed to switch between powered coils of wire in response to variances in utility power input, thereby increasing or decreasing the magnetic field and the resulting output voltage to connected equipment.

This type of UPS tolerates undervoltage brownouts and overvoltage surges without consuming backup battery power by automatically selecting different power taps on the AVR autotransformer. During normal operation, incoming AC power bypasses the autotransformer (where voltage highs and lows are controlled) while also charging the battery. When the incoming voltage falls below the AVR range, the UPS switches to battery backup, and the DC-AC inverter circuitry is engaged. Power will continue to be supplied by the battery-inverter circuit until incoming voltage returns to the range manageable by the AVR.

Why does my CyberPower UPS product beep?

Reasons why your CyberPower product might beep:
UPS systems are designed to make beeping noises to alert users that the UPS is having difficulties by providing quick responses to specific issues.

Types of beeping noises:

  1. Beeping twice every 15-45 seconds: The problem with beeping twice noise is usually an indicator that the CyberPower unit is running on battery power only.
  2. Long solid beep: This is usually an indicator that you have overloaded your CyberPower unit.
  3. Rapidly beeping: This is usually an indicator that your CyberPower product’s battery is almost out of charge.

How to fix each of these beeping noises:

Beep twice every 15-45 seconds:

  1. Check to ensure that the unit is correctly plugged into the wall outlet.
  2. Ensure the wall outlet is functioning properly by unplugging your CyberPower unit and then plugging it into a different outlet.
  3. If the other wall outlet works, then you should still contact an electrician to repair the broke wall outlet.

Long solid beep:

  1. Unplug low priority electronics and plug them into the Surge-only outlets on your CyberPower product.
  2. If this doesn’t work, unplug the unit from the wall outlet after all the equipment have been unplugged from the unit.
  3. Note: this might be an indication that you need a new CyberPower unit that can keep up with the demand that is required.

Rapidly beeping:

  1. Turn off the UPS because it’s at about 25% battery and it’s going to shut off soon.
  2. Note: turning off the UPS means that the power is out and none of the outlets will work if you turn the UPS off.

Mute beeping:

  1. The devices user manual will contain the explicit instructions on which steps to take to mute beeping on your UPS.  Search for your model number in the search box in the navigation to find the product detail page. Locate the “Downloads” tab on the product detail page.  In the “Downloads” tab, you will find a link to the PDF user manual.

Applies to the following CyberPower UPS product lines:

What is the difference between the Battery/Surge outlets and the Surge outlets?

Many CyberPower UPS units have two sets of outlets. One set is labeled “Battery/Surge” and one set is labeled “Surge”. The outlets labeled “Battery/Surge” are the outlets that will receive battery power during a power failure. You should plug your computer and monitor into these outlets and any externally powered critical data storage device.

Items such as printers, speakers, scanners, and faxes should be plugged into the outlets labeled “Surge.” These outlets are intended for low priority electronics that are not essential to the PC’s main operation.
